I’m adding this to help others with the same problem. I spent hours trying to get past the terminal emulator step. I’m using a 2017 Macbook Pro, 10.13.4 OS. Therefore, I have to use adapters for a USB connection. The first several times I ran the command ''ls /dev/tty.* ''I received 3 different usbmodem addresses with my first adapter plugged in. None of them worked. I then swapped adapters to one that only had a single USB connection. I then received 4 different addresses and none of them worked either (the same prior 3 plus a new one). I then restarted the computer with the 2nd single USB adapter, ran the command, and then only received a single usbmodem address. It finally worked!! UGH to Apple’s USB-C and all the expensive adapters I’ve had to buy!
